1. Chapter 10 - Yayati's Story.
Chapter 10 - Yayati's Story. Lomaharshana said: 1. Nahusha had six descendants who were the reflections of Indra and Vishnu. They were born to Viraja, the daughter of Pitra. 2. They were - Yati, Yayati, Sharyati, Ayati, Yati and Suyati. Yayati became the king among them. 3. Yati was the eldest. Yayati was younger than him. Yati, who was very pious, married Gomati, the daughter of Kakusta, but he became a sage. He realized Brahma and was freed from sins. 4-8. Yayati, the eldest of the remaining five, conquered the earth. He married Devayani, the daughter of the Ushaans, and the asura woman Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvana. Devayani gave birth to Yadu and Turvasu. Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvana, gave birth to Druhyu, Anuvu and Puru. Pleased with him, Indra gave him the most brilliant divine chariot. All its parts were made of gold. The divine white horses were as fast as the mind could imagine. By this chariot he carried out his activities. With this fine chariot, the invincible Yayati conquered the earth in six days and defeated the gods and demons in battle. 9-17. That chariot belonged to the kings of the Kuru race. It was handed over to the Kuru dynasty by Janamejaya, a Kuru descendant named Samvartavasu, to the tried emperor of the Kuru dynasty. The chariot disappeared due to the curse of the sage Garga. King Janamejaya spoke harshly to Garga and severely injured the son of Garga, who was then a boy. Therefore, he was guilty of the sin of killing a Brahmin. The saintly king wandered here and there, exuding the stench of rusty iron. The citizens and the people of the country kept him away. He did not find peace of mind in any way. He was in great grief. He could not get comfort from any side. Then the king took refuge in the renowned Brahmin Shaunaka. O noble Brahmin, to purify him, Shaunaka performed the Aswamedha sacrifice on behalf of King Janamejaya. After completing the last oil anointing of Avabhrutu, he expelled the stench of rusty iron. That divine chariot was in the possession of the wicked ruler, and Indra was pleased with him and handed it over to him. From him Brihadratha obtained it. From him it came into the possession of King Brihadratha (Jarasandha). After killing Jarasandha, Bhima freed that magnificent chariot. Bhima, the heir to the Kuru dynasty, gave it to Vasudeva out of love for him. 18. Yayati, the son of Nahusha, after conquering the earth up to the oceans containing the seven continents, divided his kingdom among his sons. 19-21. Yayati crowned his eldest son Yadu in the eastern part, Puru in the central part, and Turvasu in the southeastern part. They rule the entire earth, including the cities and the seven continents, even today with the respect due to their jurisdiction. O excellent sage, I will describe their descendants later. 22. The king became old. I laid aside his bows and arrows. He entrusted the entire administration to his relatives, including five prominent men, his sons. 23. Having placed his hands in the treasury, the king walked on the earth. King Yayati was very happy. 24-25. After thus distributing the kingdom, Yayati said to Yadu—“My dear son, accept my old age. Having become young again with your beautiful qualities and having deposited my old age in you, I will roam the earth with another purpose. Accept my old age”. Yadu said : 26. O king, I have promised alms to a Brahmin. I have not yet handed them over to him. I will not take your old age without fulfilling it. 27. There are many defects in old age due to drinking and eating. Therefore, O king, I am not eager to accept your old age. 28. O king, you have many sons who love you more than me. O one who knows the virtues, choose another son to take your old age. 29. The king was angry when Yadu thus rebuked him. Yayati, who was the best in eloquence, rebuked his son and said thus. Yayati said : 30. "What further stage will there be in your life? O rascal, what duty or virtue is left to you after insulting me, since I am your teacher". 31. Say, O Brahmins, in anger he cursed his son thus— “O deceiver, your people will undoubtedly lose their kingdom. 32. O excellent Brahmins, Yayati was also repulsed by his three sons, and the king also said the same to Druhyu, Turvasu and Anuva. 33. Yayati, enraged, cursed the invincible king also. O excellent Brahmins, I have told you everything about him with certainty. 34. O Brahmins, after Puru had thus groomed his four eldest sons, the king also spoke to Puru in the same words. 35. “O Puru, if you agree, I will again become young with your beautiful features and, having filled my old age with you, I will roam around the earth.” 36. That valiant Puru, having He occupied old age. With the beautiful features of Puru, Yayati roamed around the earth. 37. Seeking the ultimate satisfaction of sensual pleasures, the best of kings, along with the lord Visvachi, indulged in lustful games in the Caitraratha grove. 38. When the king, completely dissatisfied and disgusted with sensual pleasures and pleasures, withdrew his old age from Puru. 39-46. In this regard, O best of sages, Yayati sang the following verses - "Like a tortoise withdraws its limbs into itself, he who withdraws all lustful desires within himself. A truly accomplished man never diminishes lust and lustful propensity by enjoying sexual pleasures. Just as fire becomes more and more inflamed by the pouring of ghee, so it increases with every indulgence. He finds that if he possessed all the grams of rice and barley on earth, possessed all the gold, became the master of all the animals on earth, or indulged in sexual intercourse with all the women, it would not be enough to quench his thirst. Being so, he should not be deceived by these things. When there is no sinful feeling towards any living being, mentally, physically, and verbally, he is likely to attain Brahma. When he is not afraid of others, when no one fears him, or when he does not like or dislike others much, he attains Brahma. The one who abandons greed and avarice attains happiness, which the wicked cannot abandon, which, though they are subject to old age and decay, do not become old, and this is the oil that ends only when the vital gases perish. When one is old, one's hair becomes old; when one is old, one's teeth become old; but hope for wealth and life and greed never become old when one is old. The happiness to be derived from indulging in sexual pleasure, the greatest happiness that one can attain in heaven - both of theseThey are not even worthy of one-sixteenth of the joy that is certain to be obtained when greed is destroyed. 47-51. Having said this, the saintly king entered the forest with his wife. He performed great penance for a long time. That king of great fame performed penance on the peak of Bhrigutunga. At the end of the penance, he performed the sacred ritual without taking food and left his mortal body. He attained heaven with his wife. O excellent sage, five excellent sages were born in his family. Like the rays of the sun, the whole earth is pervaded by them. O excellent sage, one who constantly hears the story of Yayati obtains progeny, longevity and courage. Now listen, I will describe the Yadu dynasty, which was respected by kings. It was in this that Narayana was born as the uplifter of the lineage of Hari and Vishnu.
